Spearfishing at Porto Moniz

Last week my spearfishing buddy and I had a go at Porto Moniz as the weather conditions were favorable.
The drive out to Porto Moniz took longer than usual as with the recent floods some of roads were washed away and one had to take alternative routes. Porto Moniz is located on the north side of the island and waters there are usually very agitated meaning that there is good fish when diving conditions are favorable.
We wasted no time in getting equipped and within 30 minutes we were in the water. The water temperature was around 18º something that I am not accustomed to so it took a little time adapting. Furthermore visibility was down to 5 meters making it difficult to spot fish.
After three hours of searching in vain for good fish we decided to head back. Claudio my dive buddy still managed to get a nice size sea bream and a medium sized grouper.
Summer will be coming soon and with it come good sized Amberjacks. Something to look for. ..

Spearfishing on Madeira Island

Madeira Island offers great spearfishing conditions for amateur and pro spearos. The water is often clean and warm during the Summer months with water temperature averaging 22 degrees and in Winter dropping to 18 degrees.

Spearfishing permits are required and can be obtained in Funchal´s Captania. One can opt for an express licence which costs €10.00 or a standard licence costing €5.50 but has a waiting period of two days.
